1 Month

As anyone with kids knows life can get crazy so it is moments like this that I am learning to love.....the silence in the middle of the night where I can feed and snuggle my littlest one. My little Sam is a rockstar of sorts when it comes to eating and going right back to sleep in the middle of the night. However, there are nights like tonight where I have a hard time putting him down. Time is going by so fast, soon this little boy will be too busy to rock in my arms.....so tonight I hold him close and listen to him sleep. I look forward to watching him grow and become a boy full of life, spunk, passion, and silliness but tonight I press pause for just a minute.

Samuel Nolan Coleman

So I am like a year and half behind on the blog but I wanted to post the details about the birth of Sam before I forget. And who doesn't like a good ole' birth story ;)

On, Sunday December 22, 2013 we all woke up and got ready to head in to church. As we began the drive into church; we just recently moved so we are about 30 minutes from the church until we move into our new place, I started having contractions. They continued all the way thru church and that afternoon. By 3 PM I was exhausted and managed to lay down and catch a few Zzz's for a couple hours before we had to head back to the church for our Christmas Musical Fireside.

On the way to the musical fireside Nate got pulled over. And the officer came up and asked us how our evening was going and what we were doing. Thankfully the pregnant wife got him out of the ticket with just a warning. :)

After getting home from the fireside, we got Tanner settled in bed, and were headed down to our bed when my water broke. That is when the packing started. Nate hollered up to Tanner and told him to get up because he was going to have a sleepover with cousins. Tanner got right out of bed thinking that was a great idea.

As we were preparing to head out the door all Nate could keep saying was "I am so not prepared." Nate and I had been so busy with the move and preparing for Tanner's birthday and Christmas that we hadn't pre-packed and Nate didn't even have a bag to pack in (he ended up putting everything he needed in his work bag and a Nordstrom's sack). So there we were in all our organized glory headed for the big event six days early.

I am pleased to say our drive to the hospital was less eventful than the drive to the fireside had been. We arrived at the hospital around 9:30 PM where we met Angeline, my sister-in-law, and handed off Tanner. After getting all checked in they confirmed my water had broken but all contractions had stopped. Weird and annoying because I had been having contractions all day and normally when your water breaks they get worse; at least that is what happened with Tanner.

Around midnight they started the pitocin. The next seven hours were awful. The contractions kept getting more and more painful. With Tanner I had progressed to a six by the time I was checked in and settled so I got my epidural right way, before I was in any serious pain. That was not the case with Sam it was seven hours of awfulness, they finally let me get an epidural around 7:30 AM, when I was dilated to a measly 3, in hopes it would relax me enough to dilate more and so they could really crank up the pitocin.

The epidural made me feel like a new woman despite dropping my blood pressure, it tends to do that with me every time. As I was settling in hoping to get some rest the nurse came back in and started moving my positions. Apparently as my contractions continued to escalate in intensity and duration Sam's heart rate would drop drastically during each contraction. It was around 10 am when they started administering oxygen and called the doctor.

At this point I am exhausted and a little scared. I don't know how I would have made it thru all that was about to happen without Nate's support. He was so calm and was able to help calm me. The doctor arrived, read thru all of the EKG's on baby, and then turned around with his thoughts. Since I was not progressing very quickly and still was not far enough along to try and wait things out he suggested we do a C section. Nate and I nodded our heads and confirmed that we would do whatever needed to be done to get baby here safely.

Things from that point went so fast. My room filled with people and I was getting wheeled out, poked, prodded and prepped for surgery. I was experiencing such fear, anxiety, and disappointment that I was having to try very hard to keep it together. To be honest, I couldn't keep it together and had tears streaming down my face. I was so happy when Nate all dressed in scrubs came in the OR. The doctor had everyone stop what they were doing so Nate could give me a priesthood blessing before the procedure started. What a blessing it is to be married to a worthy priesthood holder who could offer me peace and comfort at such a scary time, what a blessing it was to be surrounded by a knowledgable, respected doctor who is a member of my faith and would halt the action in the OR for a brief moment so I could have this blessing, and what a blessing to be in a hospital with a staff that respected my faith and allowed us to have that moment.

Then it was the big moment where I got "sliced and diced" and would soon meet my son. As the doctors did their thing, Nate sat by my head talking to me about breathing, staying clam, how he knew I was disappointed at how things were turning out but that I was strong and would get thru this recovery like a champ. We also talked about how no matter how Sam got here he was going to be such a blessing that would bring us such joy. A child was something many people would give anything for and I was going to have to do this hard thing for mine.

Minutes later there was a small cry as Samuel Nolan Coleman entered the world at 10:41 AM on December 23, 2013. He weighed 6lbs 2oz and was 21" long. Nate kept saying "he is perfect, he is perfect." That is were my water works started again, I was flooded with relief that Sam was perfect and him and I were going to be ok.
It was then that we learned that Sam had been all wrapped up in the umbilical cord, it was around his neck, chest, and under his shoulder. There was no way I would have been able to have a happy, healthy, and safe baby vaginally.

Nate has been Superman putting everyone's needs before his own to care for me, Tanner, and Sam. He helped me get up and around to care for Sam, made sure Tanner had sometime, assembled Christmas presents, played Santa, cooked meals, was up in the night with me since I couldn't get up by myself, changed diapers, made bottles, and gave all three of us much needed hugs, kisses, and snuggles. Everyone also says he gets extra points for being the best publicist keeping everyone informed of the happenings at the hospital.

Tanner could not be a more adorable, loving older brother. The second day in the hospital they came to take Sam to the nursery for tests and he started freaking out asking "where are they taking Sam daddy?" He could not be more proud to introduce Sam to people at the store or church. He has had a few moments at home while trying to adjust to all the changes, an honestly who blames him this is big stuff, but overall he has been amazing.

Recovering from a c section has not been easy but I was surrounded by a wonderful, helpful husband, in laws who dropped everything to come to my home and take care of me while Nate worked, and my own family who spent 10 days over their holiday break and visit doing laundry, cooking, cleaning, and caring for me and the boys.

12 short days after Sam's birth Sam started acting funny: crying, refusing to eat, and not opening his eyes. We checked his temperature before bed and it was normal. We chalked his behavior up to an upset tummy or him being overly tired. But after a night of trying to comfort him and listening to little whimpers of pain we took him to the ER. Upon arrival the nurse tried to convince us that he had colic and was just a fussy baby. I was starting to question my decision to bring him but kept saying to myself but babies with colic or upset tummies still eat and for 12 days he has been a happy baby, ate great, always slept for three hour stretches at night, and back to bed. I know it was only 12 short days but this behavior was not typical of my baby Sam. The doctor came in tho and informed us that Sam was now running a very high fever and they were going to administer antibiotics and start running tests. They started and IV, took blood samples, and prepped him for a spinal tap. After doing all of that they made the decision to transfer us to Mercy Children's Hospital in St. Louis. Sam was not well enough to ride in the car with us so Sam and Mommy got to take their first (and hopefully last) ambulance ride. Sam then spent two and half days in the hospital. They never could get an answer about what was making him sick but the courses of antibiotics broke the fever and Sam was back to his normal self.

Once again I was reminded of how amazing my in-laws are as they stepped up to help with Tanner so Nate and I could be by Sam's side at the hospital. They also brought us food so we didn't perish on cafeteria food ;) I am one blessed girl!

I now sit at four weeks since Sam's birth and I feel great. We are all getting into a routine and I am getting brave enough to attempt to venture out of the house with the two boys alone for errands and activities. I feel so blessed to be a mom to Tanner and Sam, I hope I can teach them everything they need to learn. Nate and I have created a beautiful family and I look forward to what the future holds.

Shoes

Last night Nate was part of a motorcycle escort group that escorts the local WWII Veterans to the bus depot where they then board a bus for their annual trip to Washington DC. He was home late and had left his big steel-toed boots out. As I have mentioned before Tanner loves shoes and I found him doing this while I was making breakfast.....

Dressed in boots ready to ride.

Check out these shoes mom.....they are awesome! He was just jabbering away pointing to the boots telling me all about it.

A Favorite Place

Tanner has a favorite place to sit and play cars and watch the cars, trucks, and (in our town) the tractors drive by. The ottoman is where you can find Tanner with a handle full of cars throughout the day. He just loves it there.

A Trip to Utah for a Wedding

My Aunt Katie got married in March so Tanner and I used this as a perfect excuse to go to Utah and visit for the week.  It was so fun but a little too long to be gone without Nate.  Tanner was spoiled rotten with hugs, kisses, story times, playtime buddies, trips to the park, watching Eliza play ball, chocolate chip cookies, and everyones undivided attention.  He was such a good sport on the many planes we had to take (he is beyond sleeping and needs to be fully entertained) and the hours spent at wedding festivities.  He is such a trooper.

Tanner did not like standing for pictures after hours of waiting so thank you photoshop :)

Look at that live action shot....ball in motion (I may finally be figuring out my camera)

Tanner would come get his hat and gloves when he got cold, then the sun would peak out and he would rip them off.  Such a smart boy.

Not sure what this face means but it sure makes me laugh :)

Duke

For Christmas Nate's dad gave him a trip to North Carolina for a Duke vs University North Carolina basketball game at Cameron Indoor Stadium. So March 1 we headed to Durham, NC. We had a great weekend trip and as Duke fans we loved the experience of being at Cameron Indoor for the big game.

We learned a few things on our trip:
-Students line up and camp out starting four weeks before the big game. There are all these rules about how it works. If you have a minute google rules for K-Town at Duke University very fascinating. Would you have the guts to do it?
-The city of Durham is a bit sketchy so maybe stay in Raleigh or Chapel Hill.
-Dress cool. Cameron Indoor is not cooled very well considering it is an old building so sweatshirts or long sleeves even in the dead of winter would be "over dressing." They pack people in that place like sardines in a can.
-Staying in a hotel with the Black Panther Motorcycle Gang for the weekend will result in no sleep. And strange men and women knocking on your door at all hours of the night.

All in all it was a fantastic and fun trip that we will always remember.

Cameron Indoor (it is so cool, you would have no idea a basketball arena was in there)

Did I mention Tanner tripped on campus and his head broke his fall???

Cars

Well there is one thing you must know about Tanner.  He loves cars, big cars, small cars, toy cars, and grown up cars.  So as the weather turned quickly to spring and I realized quickly I had no outside toys.  As I was discussing this predicament with Nate we both brought up how we loved our Little Tikes car and soon realized this would be perfect for the little boy who loves cars.

Little did I know upon purchase of the Little Tikes Cozy Coupe what lay ahead.  The thing came in a million pieces and took two days for me and Nate to get it put together.  It all turned out great tho and our little man sure loves it to pieces. Tanner tried to be helpful and would sit in the car long before we go it together.

It was finally finished on a Friday morning so Tanner had to take it for a test drive in his pajamas around the house a few times.
